Sugared and Spiced Nuts

1 T softened butter
2/3 cup sugar
1 t cinnamon
1/2 t ground clove
1/4 t ground nutmeg
1/4 t ground ginger
1/4 t ground allspice
1/2 t salt
1 egg white, lightly beaten
2 T cold water
3 - 3 1/2 cups mixed raw nuts and seeds

Preheat oven to 275 degrees. Spread softened butter on a large baking sheet.

Combine sugar, spices and salt in a small bowl, mix well. Add egg white and water and stir until mixture is a smooth paste. Stir in about 1/2 cup nut mixture. When they are evenly coated remove with a fork to a small sieve. Let excess egg and spice mixture drain back into the bowl. Transfer nuts to the baking sheet. Repeat this process until all the nuts and seeds have been coated.

Arrange the nuts and seeds in a single layer on the baking sheet. Bake for 45 minutes or until coating is crisp and golden brown. Cool and store in a tightly covered jar in the refrigerator.

Makes 3 - 31/2 cups of nuts.

Notes:

To speed up the cooking process you can bake the nuts at 300 degrees for 35 minutes. This recipe is from my Mother-in-law. She always made them as a special Christmas treat.
